Steel Reinforcement Corrosion in Concrete

Steel Reinforcement Corrosion in Concrete

Steel Reinforcement Corrosion in Concrete

(OP)
Hi All;

In some columns of my house the contractor has not cut off the excess reinforcement steel bars. They are sticking out of the column. I presume they will get rusted over time. My worry is; Could that rust penetrate inside the concrete? What should I do to prevent it from going inside? My house is located in a South Asian country where humidity could go up to 90% and temp 30-35 C.

Thanks in Advance

RE: Steel Reinforcement Corrosion in Concrete

You might be better off red flagging your own post and trying in the structural engineering other topics forum - a very busy forum.

Take some photos and any plans you have for the reinforcement and post them.

Are the columns exposed to the outside wind and rain?

Re-bar should not be "sticking out" unless it is there for future column extension.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

RE: Steel Reinforcement Corrosion in Concrete

The rebar sticking of the concrete out will corrode if not protected. Remove exposed rebar and grout seal.
If you are in a coastal environment, more problems should be expected.
