Short Term Environmental Loading

Short Term Environmental Loading

(OP)
I'm performing some foundation works that will limit the lateral capacity of the structure in question. It's only for a short while, and by inspection it looks like things should be okay for any reasonable loads that could occur during the modifications. Design level seismic or wind events are not likely to happen while a foundation is excavated. I want to quantify this, though, if possible.

I've seen reduction factors that deal with this somewhere, but can't remember for sure. Is it in ASCE 37 - "Design loads on structures during construction"? If it is, I'll grab a copy. If not, are there any suggestions on good sources?

RE: Short Term Environmental Loading

Yes - ASCE 37 has adjustments for short term conditions. For example, they have adjustments to the wind forces for various time spans of construction that factor down the wind.

Wonderful! Thanks.

RE: Short Term Environmental Loading

I dealt with this on Friday for a non-seismic temporary project in Canada (I believe that you're also in Canada). For the seismic, you need to figure out compatible acceleration parameters. I was just going to use Montana's values. If you're on the west coast, it may be a bit trickier.

A snag for me was that the ASCE 36 document references ASCE 7-95 which I wasn't able to acquire on short notice. You'll see what I mean when you get into it.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Apparently they issued an ASCE 37-14, which references ASCE 7-10. That'll be wonderful, since ASCE 7-10 is fairly compatible with the NBCC for seismics.

RE: Short Term Environmental Loading

Thanks for the update. Time to bust out the credit card...

RE: Short Term Environmental Loading

Wait.. you mean ASCE 37-"12" is finally out?

Hallelujah!
