How ot add additional lines to a drawing

How ot add additional lines to a drawing

How ot add additional lines to a drawing

(OP)
Hi,
I am wondeing How ot add additional lines to a drawing,
in a case to add lines to a view and then to get dimensions from those lines.

RE: How ot add additional lines to a drawing

You can either sketch them or expand the view and draw them using Basic Curves. About as basic as it gets.

I can't fimd Basic curves in Drafting, only sketch curves
Where is a Basic Curves icaon located?

RE: How ot add additional lines to a drawing

The location of "basic curves" depends on the version of NX you are running. Try using the command finder. Or use one of the various line/arc commands; turn off the "associative" option for a dumb curve (equivalent to using basic curves), or leave it on to create a curve feature.

RE: How ot add additional lines to a drawing

Note that our longterm direction is to only use the sketcher as a means of adding additional curve objects to the body of a Drawing or its views.

John,

Are you implying that NO other curve type will be allowed in drafting other than a sketch curve? If so, you're probably going to have some really upset customers. As you can see by the OP's question - that leaves the customer with the burden of training their drafting people to use and manage sketches. One can only ask WHY.....

RE: How ot add additional lines to a drawing

Given the UG/NX track record of supporting legacy workflows, I doubt the other approaches will be eliminated. Really hidden, maybe difficult to activate, but probably not gone forever.

But, this is just guessing on my part.

RE: How ot add additional lines to a drawing

The future of CAD is developing models that manufacturing can manufacture too. And not drawings that have cobbled lines/arcs added to drawing views and are not part of the solid model geometry. And additionally, dimensions that are not part of the actual models and they are edited dimensions. I don't completely understand why organization by an expensive 3D modeling CAD system and people are still developing static lines and arcs. It's probably a matter of time that everything will be done as a 3D model and there will be no editable view within the drawing. Matter of a fact, I see the drawing going away completely and we are manufacturing to a solid model.

RE: How ot add additional lines to a drawing

Since starting with NX (~2001), I deal mostly with injection molded parts. Our usual workflow is to give the tool & die makers a copy of the solid; they can quickly generate toolpaths with this information. Like you, I also imagine the drawing will eventually go away. However, we are not there yet and there is some information on the drawing that is easier to "cobble in" with lines/arcs. A few examples I've seen:
  • placement of labels or other artwork for the finished part
  • boundaries of texture or paint location when there is no convenient feature on the model to dimension to
  • boundary callouts for the toolmakers such as "no ejectors allowed in this area"

RE: How ot add additional lines to a drawing

nobody really is saying the curves on this drawing are for the part itself as some has nsinuated here

RE: How ot add additional lines to a drawing

cowski,

Given what happened with Linear Dimensions, I wouldn't be surprised by anything this day and age. Just wanted to hear any plans before we're painted into another corner. As for the rest, jerry1423 hit the nail on the head. Drawings aren't just about the part - a little more to it than that.
