How to plan an induction generator in plant

How to plan an induction generator in plant

How to plan an induction generator in plant

(OP)
Dear ALL,

I met an issue need help that is how to design and plan an induction generator (IG) in chemical plant.

Normally, I always find Synchronous generator (SG) in the plant.

What is the main design concern between IG and SG?

Is there any IG design guide or reference can lead me to plan?

Include protection scheme, criterion of parallel with utility and control philosophy etc.

The said induction generator rating as below,

kW:2350kW
kV:3.3kV
Power Factor:0.9

Your advice shall be appreciated, thanks in advance.

RE: How to plan an induction generator in plant

There is little to worry about from an electrical point of view due to thier simplicity. Run them up to speed and switch onto grid, however, you do need to consider the site power factor as you will have a decrease in load from the utility when it runs and an increase in VARs, which could be financialy limiting depending on your tarrifs.

The second issue is runaway, which is usually very high, and if they become self excited by say pF correction capacitors can make a mess of your system without adequate protection.

Rodmcm, thanks for your great advice.

I want to know how to calculate capacitor size to compensate reactive value.

Does it just concern the power factor of induction generator, or need to take system condition into account, when we estimate the capacitors?

Have any real practice recommendation?

Thanks again.
