4/5-axis surface milling with a flat endmill

4/5-axis surface milling with a flat endmill

4/5-axis surface milling with a flat endmill

(OP)
Good day,

I'm requiring a little help with 4/5-axis milling of a surface with a flat endmill.
We fabricate wedding rings and would like to use a new machine and CAM to do some mill work required for setting stones (in this case a setting called a pavésetting).
I've got the turning down to how I want it done.
And I've got the outer contour of the pavé done with Variable Contour using a Curve/Point drive method (drive curve is a curve which is invisible in the picture).
The path is milled using some sort of chamfer mill.

But, now I'm having trouble milling the remainder of the curved surfaces.
In this ring the surfaces to mill only curve in 1 direction (it's a line revolved around the central axis).
I would like to mill the selected faces (not the grooves or the hole as they are already machined) using a small flat endmill (diameter 0.5mm or smaller).
I've tried various drive methods with Variable Contour using Towards Line as Projection Vector, but I can't seem to get it to machine the area correctly.

Any help or tips would be much appreciated.
I'm using NX 8.5

Here's a picture of the whole ring to make things more clear:

I've managed to get it (more or less) how I want it by creating sheet geometry in the contour of the cross with a bottom surface.
I then use Variable Contour operation with a Contour Profile drive geometry while selecting the walls and bottom surface.
So far it seems to work fine enough.
