Student Version of NX 10.0 available?................

(OP)
Hi,

Hello Mr. Baker,
Is there a Student Version of NX 10.0 available?........

Thanks

MZ7DYJ

RE: Student Version of NX 10.0 available?................

I've only found the sites for NX 9.0:

http://www.academicsuperstore.com/products/Siemens...

http://www.journeyed.com/item/Siemens/NX+/1575552

I'll ask around to see when the the NX 10.0 version is available.

Thanks a lot!
Look forward to hear from you.

RE: Student Version of NX 10.0 available?................

I have an update.

I've been told that our policy is to wait until the first maintenance release has been incorporated into NX before they build the images which are used for the student versions of the software, which is what we supply to our partners who handle the sale and distribution of these student versions of NX. At the moment that first MR is not yet available for NX 10.0, and while we expect it to be available soon for download from the GTAC support site, perhaps as soon as the end of the month, we can't say exactly how long after that it will be before it makes its way to our student software partners.

If I learn anything additional on this front, I'll update this thread again.

Hi,

One drawback about these Learning Editions is about reading IGES or STEP cad formats.

Sometimes you have to experiment with some complex geometry cases(for toolpaths or for synchronous modeling) since such models are already designed in other CAD systems. But you can't read iges or step files and there is not enough time to redesign the models in NX. Moreover redesigning the model in NX would totally eliminate the usage of sync modelling methods which could be tested to fix the non native cad data.

The academic edition of most software is sold to allow you to learn the system and commands. It is not sold for doing production work. There are reasons they have eliminated the import/export of files from other sources as those functions are usually associated with production work and not learning the software itself. While there are nuances to doing imported file work, they leave that for the fully licensed version of the software. The watermarks on the drawings is another thing the vendors put in the software so production drawings cannot be produced on an academic system. I know some vendors who also modify the file header so files created on the academic system cannot be opened in a commercial system.

You are paying a significantly reduced price for a CAD system that will allow you to become proficient in utilizing the user interface and learning the workflow process to create designs in a productive manner.

RE: Student Version of NX 10.0 available?................

Hi,

I think you missed my point. Say I am teaching NC-programming class. I am not going to ask my students to spend entire semester to build some complex part model. Actually I'll be teaching a few advanced 5-axis courses here in SoCal later this year. I think it will be Catia V5.

Anyway if NX allows a simple read capability of iges/step then it would not be a problem at all. Students will have a better opportunity to work with some real scenarios.

Moreover, nowadays NC-programmers mostly work on the customers' models. So there is lot less done in design except some nc-geometry to make some custom toolpath.

RE: Student Version of NX 10.0 available?................

I think this discussion is confusing 2 different products.
The STUDENT edition is sold to students, and has some restrictions to prvent production use.
ACADEMIC bundles and licenses are available to schools to use in their curriculum.

If your school has academic licenses, I would ask your Siemens PLM representative it translators are available.

RE: Student Version of NX 10.0 available?................

Hi Mark,

Reading iges/step wont change any restrictions on the production use. We are talking 2 different things here.
1. I believe the educational version at schools probably has an option to read these iges/step formats.
2. The one that students can purchase for $150 for one year license does not have this capability.

RE: Student Version of NX 10.0 available?................

Note that the cost of a one-year license to the so-called 'Student Edition' of NX 9.0 is UNDER a $100.
