Fire zone classification of Jet fuel storage area

Fire zone classification of Jet fuel storage area

Fire zone classification of Jet fuel storage area

(OP)
Dear All,

What would be the fire zone of an aviation fuel (Jet A1) storage and handling area. It consists of 4 storage tanks, tanker loading area, tank loading facilities, etc.

Thanks
Kris

RE: Fire zone classification of Jet fuel storage area

Does the fuel have a closed cup flash point temperature > 37.8 degrees C and is it stored at NTP? If so, hazardous location electrical classification is not required by NFPA 70, National Electrical Code.

RE: Fire zone classification of Jet fuel storage area

NFPA-30 is a complex and lengthy document that covers tank and component location, emergency venting and many other provisions. Suggest that you contract with a consultant about tank farm/handling facility layout and component selection

According to this typical MSDS for Jet fuel A-1, the flash point is >100F and the OSHA/NFPA classification is Combustable class 2

There can be considerable variation in properties for A-1

This thread would be better suited in the eng-tips "Storage Tank" forum
