box grider intermediate stiffener welding

(OP)
dear all,

we are using a 1500(depth)x600(width)x20(flange thk)x12(web thk) Box Grider for one of our machine support structure,we are providing intermediate stiffeners for avoiding web buckling at the spacing of 1500mm.

We are connecting this intermediate stiffener to the web of the member using fillet weld and Both Top and bottom Flange of the member by fillet weld.

i have seen some book citing that the intermediate stiffener for Plate Griders are not to be welded with the bottom tension flange. IS it applicable to the Box griders also?

regards,

senthil kumar.b

RE: box grider intermediate stiffener welding

The concern about welding to a tension flange is due to the potential for fatigue cracking, unless your box beam doesn't have a tension flange you answered your question.

BTW - you can weld to a tension flange BUT you have to stay below the stress range for the detail.
