Fillet weld channel to bottom of W-shape?

Fillet weld channel to bottom of W-shape?

Fillet weld channel to bottom of W-shape?

(OP)
Is it acceptable to fillet weld a channel to the bottom of a W-shape? I'd like to weld all sides of a C6 to the bottom of a W8 to support some lightweight pipes but table J2-5 of AISC 325 doesn't show an option for a fillet weld loaded normal to the axis of the weld.

RE: Fillet weld channel to bottom of W-shape?

I should add that the channel will be pointing normal (straight downward) from the W8 (horizontal)

RE: Fillet weld channel to bottom of W-shape?

Are you trying to increase the section modulus of the W8, or is this just for attaching the piping?

Channel perpendicular to beam right? I think that you'll be fine. I'd be inclined to assume that most of the load transfer occurs near the beam web.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

msquared48: This is only to attach piping running horizontally below the W8

KootK: In cross section it looks like this:

so I imagine you're right that most of the force is transferred into the beam web
