can a variable frequency drive help in mitigating the problems associated with the use of a 60 cycle motor on 50 cycles?

Very probable. Yes. But it depends a lot on what the problems are. Sometimes, it is possible to run without any problems at all and sometimes you may need to compensate for the lower speed.
