closely spaced embed plates

closely spaced embed plates

(OP)
How does one treat the design of an embed. plate (with a group of headed studs) when it is in close proximity to another embed. plate? The type of embed. plate is cast into a concrete wall taking mainly vertical load from floor joists (therefore, there is no edge distance in the direction of the load) and are spaced roughly 12" apart. My question is what edge distance would you use in design that is perpendicular to the load? Do you use the nearest edge distance to the edge of the wall? Or do you define the edge distance as the clear space between the two anchor from each embed plate? See attached sketch.

RE: closely spaced embed plates

I think that your only issue with regard to the interaction of the two embeds will be with the pryout mode of failure. You'd either want to separate the plates such that the pryout frustums do not overlap or consider a single pryout frustum that encompasses both embeds.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: closely spaced embed plates

Or you can look at each with an edge distance of your Ca2 dimension divided by 2.
