Vector Calculation

Vector Calculation

Vector Calculation

(OP)
Hi,

I have an inclined borehole. I know the angle of inclination (deg from horizontal) and the length they drilled. I am trying to calculate out the relative depth that the drill has gone down vertically.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Richard

RE: Vector Calculation

L.sin(angle)?

RE: Vector Calculation

Nope. L Cos(angle) where the angle is the inclination from the vertical, and "L" is the length of the actual bore.

RE: Vector Calculation

OP defined inclination as angle from horizontal. Hence, L.sin(angle).

RE: Vector Calculation

But, did he define it based on the assumption that "inclination" is an angle from vertical, and did he, or someone else, convert the typical angle, measured from vertical into its complementary angle?

Of course I can. I can do anything. I can do absolutely anything. I'm an expert!

RE: Vector Calculation

Geotechs typically march to a different drummer. Since it is a vertical drill hole or nearly so we would deviate from the vertical. It is also why depths are considered positive numbers, not negative.
