Welding of pipeline by ASME IX procedure

Welding of pipeline by ASME IX procedure

Welding of pipeline by ASME IX procedure

(OP)
Hi,

I need to answer the proposal to weld a 6" STD pipeline but by the usage of a WPS qualified accordance to ASME IX requirements instead API-1104.
Proposed welding process: GTAW + SMAW
The reason for the proposed procedure is the lack of time to qualify a new process according to API-1104.
The production welds will be evaluated according to API 1104.
What opinion or suggestion have you about...?

Thanks in advance for your help

Regards

RE: Welding of pipeline by ASME IX procedure

B31.4 & B31.8 permit qualification per ASME IX. Radiographic acceptance and other NDE acceptance of production welds shall be per API 1104. Please note that the local Jurisdiction may require API 1104 only.

RE: Welding of pipeline by ASME IX procedure

One comment to add that for this scenario would be that the welders need to be qualified to ASME IX to use an ASME IX welding procedure. Seems intuitive, but the API 1104 NDE acceptance criteria occasionally confuses contractors who have a tough time differentiating welding and inspection code requirements.
