The component is a hollow pipe with a groove on its outer diameter. The groove is at one end of the pipe. This groove will receive a locking retainer. The locking retainer is assembled such that a portion of it projects above the groove and thereby locking the components assembled over the pipe abutting the locking ring against axial movement.Somewhat similar arrangement is available on the other end of the pipe meant for axial locking of the components. The groove sees the axial load and bending loads. The pipe thickness is selected based on the section required to withstand axial and bending loads.

Now my question is: Instead of using thicker pipe, can we resort to press-fitting a smaller pipe into the main pipe and welding. The main pipe and inserted pipe will be of same material. The main pipe is out of stock. Hence we are contemplating this option. Experts please advise if this can work...

I have rephrased my question for more clarity:

Now my question is: Instead of using thicker pipe, can we resort to press-fitting a smaller pipe into a bigger pipe and achieve the required thickness. Both the pipes are welded. Both pipes are of same material. Original pipe (single pipe of required thickness) is out of stock. Hence we are contemplating this option. Experts please advise if this can work...

"Pipe" normally has a seam weld down one sied which prevents a close-fitting paprt from "sliding" down the interior.

You can attempt to grind off (remove) that weld seam at one end, but the time it takes is expensive for hand operations. (But if it is only one or two items - that's not too bad.)

Is it seamless tubing? Can you find a close-fitting "new pipe" to fit inside? Don't know - You haven't told us ANY dimensions, nor any dwg or sketch! So, I don't know.
