Allowable Limits for Localized Stresses in Gussets of Support Bracket

Allowable Limits for Localized Stresses in Gussets of Support Bracket

Allowable Limits for Localized Stresses in Gussets of Support Bracket

(OP)
Find attached snapshot of FEA Analysis for Bracket Supported equipment.

We wish to check adequacy of Thickness for Support Bracket Gusset in FEA.

we wish to know Allowable Limits for Localized Stresses in Gussets of Support Bracket.

Being a non-pressure part, what will be the Allowable Stresses for these Localized Stresses? (i.e. Allowable Limits for Primary + Secondary Stresses)

Can Allowable Stresses be considered as MAX(3*Savg , 2*Syavg) as per ASME Sec. VIII Div. 2 - Clause 5.5.6.1 (b). Can they be applicable for Non-Pressure part also?

Thanks.

RE: Allowable Limits for Localized Stresses in Gussets of Support Bracket

The Code is not necessarily applicable to non-pressure parts, although the general design philosophy can be applied.

You are aware that the secondary stresses are applicable only to the failure mode of Ratcheting? Therefore, if you were to perform an FEA, you would need to follow the procedure in 5.5.6.1. In that procedure, you are to find the stress RANGE between the operating load RANGE. You do not calculate this as a static load as you would Protection Against Plastic Collapse.
