"country of origin" on drawings

"country of origin" on drawings

"country of origin" on drawings

(OP)
The management of our company is mandating that "country of origin" get listed on the drawing for each part we purchase. I believe its their interpretation of a US trade law. Has anyone else gotten this mandate and if so, what was your method to meet the mandate?

thanks
Ron

RE: "country of origin" on drawings

We do ITAR drawings daily. The "country of origin" is not mandated on any drawings.
Per ITAR, we only need this note on the upper-left corner of the drawing:

"THIS DRAWING AND/OR ITS DESIGN IS PROPRIETARY AND THE PROPERTY OF "company name" (county).
IT SHALL NOT BE REPRODUCED, COPIED, LENT OR OTHERWISE DISPOSED OF, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, NOR BE USED
TO FURNISH ANY INFORMATION FOR MAKING OF DRAWINGS, PRINTS OR APPARATUS, OR PARTS THEREFORE.
DOCUMENT SUBJECT TO U.S. EXPORT CONTROLS. COMPLIANCE APPROVAL REQUIRED PRIOR TO DISTRIBUTION."

RE: "country of origin" on drawings

The country of origin could change frequently and there could be multiple countries of origin. Seems like a very bad thing to have on a drawing.

RE: "country of origin" on drawings

Some information just doesn't belong on drawings. There are usually other, better means to track sourcing information like this.

RE: "country of origin" on drawings

I don't think your company management is driving this requirement. More likely the requirement is the result of a contract with a customer. As others noted, there are very strict ITAR restrictions with regards to disclosure of data outside the US. There are also strict procurement regulations put in place by Congress regarding material sourcing for federal contracts. You can't procure raw materials that originate from a country that is subject to a US trade embargo.

RE: "country of origin" on drawings

If you have a requirement like ITAR, that is valid to put on the drawing. Country of origin is not.
