diaphragm pump with brushless motor?

diaphragm pump with brushless motor?

diaphragm pump with brushless motor?

(OP)
Hi all,

I'm trying to build a small diaphragm pump suitable for 1-2 years of continuous daily (off-grid) use. Therefore, a brushless DC (BLDC) motor is required. I've extensively looked into what's available from US/Europe/Chinese manufacturers, and it seems that pretty much all of them only offer diaphragm pumps with brush motors (<1,000 hours of expected lifetime). Those offering BLDC motors due so with micro-diaphragm pump heads (<1 liter per minute flow).

I'd like to run a pump like this one (http://www.seaflo.com/en/productDetail_178.html) off a BLDC motor for a max Q of ~12 liters per minute and max pressure of ~45 PSI.

Is there any good reason why a diaphragm pump head like the one included in link above would be incompatible with a BLDC motor with appropriate gearing/power?

Thank you,

Allen

RE: diaphragm pump with brushless motor?

The brushless motor and its associated driver circuitry will likely cost quite a bit more than the simple brushed dc motor, but otherwise, no. We use a stepper motor to directly drive a hydraulic gear pump with good results. Finding a good bl/stepper motor can be tricky, where good = has no funky resonances within the expected operating speed range for your pump. Resonances in the motor/driver circuitry can be gotten around by various means, but can be a pain. We had good luck with 5-phase step motors.
