ASME IX - QW.261 - Stud Welding Variables

ASME IX - QW.261 - Stud Welding Variables

ASME IX - QW.261 - Stud Welding Variables

(OP)
Dear All

As per Table QW.261 in column "Brief of Variables", QW.405.1, + Position is an "essential variable".
If I understand. And I want to issue a WPS covering all positions 1S, 2S and 4S according to Figure QW.461.7, I have to qualify each position separately. Clearly, I should have 3 PQRs (1S, 2S and 4S).

I need your help to tell me if I'm right or not.

Thanks alot in advance.

RE: ASME IX - QW.261 - Stud Welding Variables

See below from 2013 Edition of ASME Section IX

QW-405.1 The addition of other welding positions
than those already qualified. see QW-120, QW-130,
QW-203, and QW-303.

Now go to

QW-203
QW-203 LIMITS OF QUALIFIED POSITIONS FOR
PROCEDURES
Unless specifically required otherwise by the welding
variables (QW-250), a qualification in any position qualifies
the procedure for all positions. The welding process
and electrodes must be suitable for use in the positions
permitted by the WPS. A welder or welding operator making
and passing the WPS qualification test is qualified for
the position tested. see QW-301.2.

So, if the WPS for stud welding was written for all positions it is not necessary to re-qualify. If a WPS was written to limit one position of stud welding for whatever reason, by virtue of QW-405.1, you must re-qualify to add a specific position. There is no limit on position for stud welding unless the originator of the WPS decides to limit it.

Dear mentengr

Thanks alot for your quick reply.
But, I'm still confused and I'm still not convinced.
Please, see interpretation below.

Best Regards

Interpretation: IX-04-28

Subject: QW-405.2, Welding Position (2004 Edition)

Date Issued: June 21, 2006

File No: 06-323

Question (1): If a Stud Welding Procedure Qualification is performed in the 4S position does the

same procedure qualification qualify for the 1S position?

Reply (1): No.

Question (2): If a Stud Welding Procedure Qualification is performed in the 4S and 2S position

does the same procedure qualification also qualify for all positions?

Reply (2): No.

RE: ASME IX - QW.261 - Stud Welding Variables

nacer16;
I should have looked at the interpretations because this is definitive. I will say, that having used Section IX for a number of years, the essential variable is not clear for stud welding position. The way it is stated, you need to re-qualify by adding a position. Yet, the reference to QW-203 makes it confusing indicating unless limited to ANY position , hence the interpretation by the committee. I do not agree with it.

So, you need to qualify for each position using separate PQR's.

Dear mentengr

Thanks alot.
I leave open the discussion in case someone wants to intervene.
