How to estimate Soil Settlements

How to estimate Soil Settlements

How to estimate Soil Settlements

(OP)
Hello everyone,

can you please share with me some of the best methods to estimate settlements in both non-cohesive and cohesive soils? I am finishing up a Geotechnical Investigation report, and they are asking for an estimation of immideiat settlement and settlement after one year of construction the building. One of my project has clay (SC) and the other project has mostly sand. (I just graduated from college). Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

RE: How to estimate Soil Settlements

There are many ways to do what you are asking. However, it would seem that your soil mechanics course would be where to start first. You may find some text, such as those by Peck or Terzaghi to relate settlements in sands to split spoon blow count. The US Navy NAVFAC manuals available on line have some ways to rough out consolidation parameters, tied to moisture content and Atterberg limits. I'm purposely vague here, because it would seem to me that anyone new to the business of writing geotechnical reports would have a mentor or two. This is serious stuff and report with wrong information, due to lack of mentoring, may result in significant job and legal problems. If you do not have a mentor who is experienced in this field, I suggest that your organization maybe should farm out the work to one that does.

RE: How to estimate Soil Settlements

Your post might as well say "How do I do Geotechnical Engineering?".

Without meaning to offend, though with the required vitriol: You need a mentor, and not one from the net.

Also, don't just come here and ask. Search. This has been answered several times (including numerous replies like this one).
