Hi,

I have a question regarding the toughness/charpy impact of structural steel in general.

Does any structural steel plate/open section under mass production in different locations in the world with very different temperature range has Charpy impact value at 20 degree Celsius? If yes, is this mandatory? What is the value (J)?

The answer to this question lies with the applicable structural steel welding code. Second, unless specified by code or by the Purchaser, CVN impact testing is not provided with all structural steel.

I have seen impact energy at +20C as low as 8 joules at specific locations in hot rolled shapes. As metengr stated, AWS D1.1 and the AISC would not require impact testing at +20C. I've seen brittle fracture in 1/2" A-36 angle iron at 28C.

For a project I am working on, we have A516GR70MT plate that is required to have CVN testing provided. We specified the testing be done at -56F but I think it is generally done at -50F or -45C with a requirement of 20J if I remember correctly. In my research for this project, I found that the 'T' in steel grades mean that it must have CVN impact energies provided. The class or grade of the steel determines what temperature the testing is performed at and energy requirements, the temp and energy mentioned above were grade 4. Canadian grade 350WT is the only other grade I have found with this.
