Relay time sync & Communication

Relay time sync & Communication

Relay time sync & Communication

(OP)
Hello All,

I am at a 2 by 1 combined cycle. I have two 4160 VAC power distribution buildings. Inside these buildings I have 31 GE Multilin 750 Feeder management relays, and 10 GE 269Plus Motor Management Relays. I have fiber run throughout the plant, and plan on using two lines for transmitting data. Now my work order only requires me to time sync the relays. I have Powell switch gear, with RS485 comm circuits built in. It would be simple to run Irig-B from satellite receiver through the fiber, convert to RS 485, and wire into GE relays. What I was thinking is could create a network, that would provide time sync and relay operational data back to a master terminal in the tech shop. If there are any guides or best practices to be followed, I really want to improve this system if I can.

Thanks,
Tony

RE: Relay time sync & Communication

Hi Tony,

You should contact the sat. clock vendor for possible best practice/typical installation guides. One thing you will need to check is the amount of devices connected to each clock channel and the length of the runs. you don't want to overload the channel or add too much delay to the signal. When you talk about comm circuits & RS-485 I assume this is separate from your IRIG-B circuit? I know that there are ways to send a time signal within a comm protocols but I have seen it more typical where the IRIG-B is brought separate to each relay.

Andy
