What braces a single angle?

What braces a single angle?

What braces a single angle?

(OP)
Does anyone have references to what braces a single angle in compression and/or bending? We are debating if a single angle is braced in both principal axis if it has a second angle attached to it perpendicularly with only one bolt. The best example is: Does the top chord of a light truss get braced by a vertical web member if both are single angle connected with one bolt? Is this decision if the bottom chord is oriented/rotated the same direction or opposite? Thanks for your input.

RE: What braces a single angle?

I vote yes. In your truss example, the webs would brace the top chord against buckling in the vertical plane and torsional/LTB buckling. Just not buckling in the horizontal plane which is obviously the job of the roof deck or transverse framing members. Were this not the case, I think that we'd have to give up on open webbed steel joista altogether.

In the OWSJ scenario, the webs and chords are welded together. Good moment/torsion connection there. For small scale stuff in the realm of an OWSJ, a single bolt would surely do. If my chord was an L8x8x1/2, I might think about it a little harder.

My vote wouldn't be be altered by the orientation of the bottom chord.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: What braces a single angle?

If I understand the system correctly, I think your brace in the x-plane would provide some bracing against buckling around both principal axes, but not of course the y-axis. If it is an equal legged angle, there would be bracing in planes 45 degrees from each of the principal axes. No reference for that.

RE: What braces a single angle?

This is for a very light equipment "frame" so all of the chord and web members are around a L2x2x1/4 or L3x3x1/4. Yes, the weak geometric axis of the truss would still need to be checked and the principal between panel points.

RE: What braces a single angle?

What position along the strut is the "one bolt"?
