'Unable to open design table using Excel 2013'

I'm getting an error message as per the title when trying to edit a design table... I've tried searching t'interweb and found an old thread which has a few suggestions, but nothing has worked so far. Behaviour is as unstable as they describe, however: I had the misbehaving file open on Friday with no problem.

I have also had the somewhat amusing/annoying message. 'Design table was created in Excel 2013 and cannot be opened in Excel 2013'.

I contacted my VAR but they don't have Excel 2013 so can't replicate it atm. Any ideas? I'm running SW 2015 SP 1.1.

Tom.

Small update: I opened the misbehaving part this morning and can edit the design table just fine. Same goes for another part that had the same error. I'm working from home, so not connected to the office network, but otherwise can't think of any differences!

RE: 'Unable to open design table using Excel 2013'

try clicking on the design table and saving to excel. See if you have any issues opening in excel. of you do not then delete the design table out of your part. same and close your part. reopen and insert design table from file and select the design table you saved to excel. do not link to external file. It has worked for me in the past. i believe that something is corrupt.
