In the attached example of the conjugate-beam method from Hibbeler, is the 2k reaction for Cy correct? If the 8k load and 30k-ft moments are removed and accounted for separately when using the superposition method, where is the vertical load coming?

Both the 8k concentrated load and the 30 k-ft moment produce upwards reactions at point C. I don't see a discrepancy there.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

If you sum moments about the center pin for the right-hand piece, you get the 2k reaction directly.

JStephen: I see, because of the hinge not allowing the transfer of moment across it, when you sum the moments about the hinge, you do it for each side individually.

KootK: You're right, it makes sense that the reaction at C would be upwards.
