Galling threshold of steel

Galling threshold of steel

Galling threshold of steel

(OP)
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could please offer some advice. I am interested in finding some data as to the galling threshold of s355 steel against s355 steel. As i have a possible situation where extremely high contact forces between two sliding components may occur, and need to find some guidance on what the limit is before galling presents itself. Unfotunately any searches on the internet just come up with the more common effects of galling between stainless steel. I guess the information must exist somewhere but im having difficulty in finding it.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

Steve

RE: Galling threshold of steel

Galling basically begins with diffusion bonding or mechanical adhesion between contacting metal surfaces, usually at the contacting asperity tips. And then material is transferred from one surface to the mating surface when the weaker contacts points are sheared due to the relative motion at the interface. The galling process is very complex and is greatly affected by many variables, such as surface roughness or cleanliness. Thus there are not any established values for galling of metals that I know of. I have seen some suggested contact stress limits published for a few materials with regards to minimizing the potential for galling, but the contact stress limits were extremely modest and came with lots of qualifications.
