API 5L pipe issue
API 5L pipe issue
(OP)
I have ordered first time API 5L Gr B pipe with requirement as DSAW. I did not specified the limit of no of long seams on purchase order.Supplier has supplied a pipe with two long seams.
customer drawing show only one long seam on his detailed piping.
Can I reject this pipe as it has two long seam & supplier did not gave clarity before supplying this pipe.
Awaiting swift response.

RE: API 5L pipe issue
What is DSAW ?
I can only find LSSAW (Longitudinal Seam Submerged Arc Welded pipe - Single Seam) or DSSAW (Double Seam Submerged Arc Welded pipe)
I only have an old copy of API 5L (2000) so I may be barking up the wrong tree.

RE: API 5L pipe issue
the 44th lists Double Seam SAWL or DSSAWL with a limit on pipe >36inch
45th defines SAWL as tubular product having one OR TWO longitudinal seams produced by submerged arc welding...
Purchase order should add "if agreed" c) 4) supply of double seam SAWL pipe (again limited to pipes > 36"
I think smart 143 has got what he ordered and there would be a big fight if he rejected it, but if it wasn't specified in either the order or the quotation then you might have a slight toe hold.
Smart143 - Why do you want to reject it?
what size pipe is it?
which version of API 5L did you specify?

RE: API 5L pipe issue
pipe I ordered was 42" sch XS to latest edition, I ordered this pipe for the first time & unfortunately we did not reviewed ordering requirement per API spec.
I did not specified no of joints in PO, but supplier neither highlighted that he is offering two seams on pipe which I believe he should have communicated to us.
RE: API 5L pipe issue
You asked:'Can I reject this pipe as it has two long seam & supplier did not gave clarity before supplying this pipe.'
Answer: No!
Advice: Next time, check out the capabilities of the pipe mill to see if they can handle plate wide enough to make your pipe size from one plate width.

Anytime you want pipe something over 24 inch diameter, you should be expecting to get more than 1 weld seam unless you specify ONLY one.
