Hi all, I was wondering if there is a way to calculate the stresses a cylindrical section of piping would experience based on a sudden increase in pressure.
Normally if you have the dimensions of the piping (Diameter D, thickness t) and a design pressure P, you can get the following stresses:
Hoop Stress = PD/2t
Longitudinal Stress = PD/4t
However say I only have how much the pressure increased by in a given time such that I have a rate in psi/hr. Is there a way to convert this to be used in the above formulas? Or is there a similar set of equations used for those in impact stresses ?

The question was in relation to an event where there was a sudden overpressure of a vessel via some piping within the vessel designed to B31.3. And I wanted to know if there was a way to ascertain if there would have been possible damage to the piping to warrant opening the vessel.
