Glycerin (Glycerol) Compability with SA372 (CS High Strength Alloy)

Glycerin (Glycerol) Compability with SA372 (CS High Strength Alloy)

(OP)
I am purchasing a new bladder accumulator for my site and was wondering of the compatbility of ASTM SA-372 Gr. E CL 70 with glycerin. The existing accumulator is no longer supported and we are unable to obtain spare parts. The existing shell is 316SS and we have never had issues. The vendors we use in the USA do not manufacture SS shells. In order to save on cost and long lead time of a SS shell I was looking into the use of SA372 for the new shell material. I see that glycerin is typically rated at "B" (good) for carbon steel but was hoping to obtain some more information.

The question of corrosion allowance may come up in response to my question. Our CA for 316SS is 0.0"/yr. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

RE: Glycerin (Glycerol) Compability with SA372 (CS High Strength Alloy)

Are there any impurities, water, or decomposition products in the glycerine?
If any of these exist even in very minor amounts then you should stick with 316L.
