correlation between DPL and SPT

correlation between DPL and SPT

(OP)
Hi everyone, I need a help in testing soil correlation. I do not know how to correlate DPL N10 impact values into SPT. How could I do that and what are the variability of the coefficient for the different types of soils?

RE: correlation between DPL and SPT

What is DPL N10? Always a good idea (perhaps not necessary with SPT) to clearly identify what you are dealing with. Is this a dynamic cone? or ?

RE: correlation between DPL and SPT

Yeah, I never reply to lazy OP's. (obvious hypocracy.)

The forum is better without offences, who wish to contribute with their knowledge is always welcome. I would rather find the answer by myself, but I’ve researched and didn’t find it. By the way Fattdad, I am asking help for those who like and want to share knowledge.

Hi BigH, I want to thank you for the interest in helping me, I’m new on the site and don’t know how manage this properly, moreover you can see, by writing that English is not my native language, but let me try to explain what you’ve asked me. DPL - Dynamic Probing Light is a penetration test with similar procedures with the SPT. N10 is the number of strokes required for crimping 10cm stem (tip).

RE: correlation between DPL and SPT

but I often do share my knowledge. This forum appeals to folks from around the world and clear writing is an advantage to the pursuit of such knowledge. Sorry for being snarky.

Happy New Year!

RE: correlation between DPL and SPT

Take a look at this link which came up with a G ogle search. There are numerous references there also. If you then can find a relationship of STP to DCP, you might get what you are looking for.

Since STP can be affected by numerous things, I suspect any correlation will be very rough, similar to an umbrella tip and ones shoe heel stomp. Don't laugh. Many a site has been evaluated that way as a start.

RE: correlation between DPL and SPT

. . . and OG has done it for sure! Sorry bneves, I had never heard of Dynamic Probing Light - I'll have to research it myself. Can I ask what country you are from? and who makes the equipment? As for language, I am English speaking native although my Canadian friends think I speak funny at times . . . but am married to an Indonesian lady who, for more than 27 years, still baffles me at times with her strong Javan accent - have worked in China, Laos, India and now Malaysia - so I am quite used to all kinds of written lingo - just keep on trying! and don't be afraid of "fattdad" - he's really a softy! and BigH really does mean BIG H.

RE: correlation between DPL and SPT

From my experience with DPL and SPT, you can't get a reliable general correlation between these tests. On top of that, DPL only penetrates up to NSPT 15 or 20, so you can't really get any good information from it if you you're only using this test for your geotechnical investigation campaign.

I have really used it only to obtain complimentary geotechnical information, always associated with SPT testing to establish a local correlation on a specific site.

Thank you Oldestguy for your help.

Big H, I want to thank you for your attention, the equipment was made in Germany.

Avscorreira, thanks for your contribution. In my programs of geotechnical investigation campaign, DPL test is not going to substitute SPT. As you sad, the result is to be used as a complementary test. But, as we use correlations between CPT and SPT and others tests...I would like to know if I could do it with DPL and SPT tests. Helding by both results making in the same site, in order to do what you usually do: Establish a local correlation for a specific site. Could you tell me how to correlate the results of these tests, considering that they were made in the same site?
