ASME stamp requirements machinery and equipment
ASME stamp requirements machinery and equipment
(OP)
Would appreciate if someone would tell me what ASME, NB and other jurisdictions ( specifically concerned about ASME sec Viii div 1 ) says about need to design and stamp Mechanical equipment such as process or rotating eqpt. In my case I am working on a project in California with an unfired absorption chiller?
The unfired absorption chiller process operates under Vaccum but has imbedded piping and Heat exchangers. The three main indepedent piping system and components include a) hot water/steam @200-250+ deg F, < 100 psi, b) chilled water @ 40-50 deg f, and < 100 Psi and c) cooling water @ 70-90 Deg F and < 50 psi.
Info also is need on pressure test requirements? under vaccum vs. the areas that are under pressure?
Would the name plate refer MAWP refer to which area of the chiller ( pressure side or vaccum side)?
Thank you in advance?

The best thing you can you could do in this case is contact the jurisdiction where the chiller is going to be installed. If you go to the National Board website at www.nationalboard.org. you will be able to get the name and e-mail for a jurisdictional contact. Each jurisdiction is different in what they regulate and what they require to bring a pressure vessel into their jurisdiction. In our jurisdiction we have absorbtion chiller systems, and we do not regulate any of the vessels. The steam piping to the vessel would be inspected only if it was above 15psi. If you are using hot water then pipe size would come into consideration.

If you are repairing this equipment contact your AIA.

Best for cert. needed, contact jurisdiction: the state of california, DOSH and if within the City of L.A., contact the dept of elevators and pressure vessels as well.
Be carefull if the item is larger in di. of 6" and pressure greater than 15 psi, you need stamping (ASME certification),
also some Cities will want your items/vessels to be ASME certified, they check at time of final installation inspection and you can have a big surprise. So the State can tell you a NO need and the City where you installed says yes, you figure it.
Also the Insurance Co, insuring the equipment, (they know it all).
