Maximum RAM for Windows NT4???
Maximum RAM for Windows NT4???
(OP)
Does anyone out there know if there is a maximum RAM limit for NT4? I just had my work system upgraded to 512MB and it seems to have slowed down?! One of the CSE's I work with told me that he heard NT had an upeer limit of 256MB.
I need to know if this is correct and whether or not to fight to have my OS upgraded as well.
Thanks for any help

RE: Maximum RAM for Windows NT4???
How is your RAM configured?
Does it have to correct FSB speed to match your mother board?
Are you using 2 slots (most likely) or 3? If 3, I have heard of problems accessing the third board unless you get registered memory. (That topic is out of my league; someone else may be able to elaborate on registered memory.)
Are the memory sticks the same brand? I had problems with conflicts between brands of RAM.
Did you verify that Windows is seeing 512MB RAM? You may have a bad stick.
Try swapping the sticks between the slots. That may help verify if you have a bad stick.
Give us some more specifics on your other hardware in order to troubleshoot your problem. You may also want to visit eng-tips sister site www.tek-tips.com.
They handle more computer related problems such as this and you will get advice from a computer guru rather than a bunch of engineers that play with computers as a hobby.

I am a Mechanical Engineer and run 3 different CAD systems. The biggest memory hog tends to run my system at around 450MB of RAM (when I had 384MB). Until recently, I was trying to squeeze by on 384MB of RAM and steal the rest off of my hard drive. I have now been upgraded to 512MB, but my system seems slower now than it ever was and runs at 550MB.
I am running a Compaq Deskpro Workstation (with the SCSI 133MHz hard drive bus) PIII 733MHz processor. I was upgraded to 512MB of RAM made by Kingston. I am running Windows NT4 SP6 Workstation.
I have heard that NT has an upper limit of 256MB of RAM, but I have not been able to verify that. Any thoughts on this would be helpful.

To answer your two other questions, I don not know how my RAM is configured or the FSB??? speed. They are the same brand of RAM and Windows is seeing 512MB.
Thanks again for your help.

In any case... just go find someone who "really" knows what they are doing. I'm sure they can get you up and running with no problem at all. I suggest you drop in on your local computer store and ask someone there what the scoop is and how to get things going. It'll minimize your frustration of trying to figure out this confusing stuff online.
