Whats new in NX 10 CAM?

Whats new in NX 10 CAM?

Whats new in NX 10 CAM?

(OP)
After looking though the whats new documentation for NX 10 CAM, I'm disappointed to see most of the changes for CAM were done in NX9.02
and not what I would have expected to see. No real changes in 3axis milling. I love the software, but we also spend a lot on yearly maintenance and we primarily use it on the CAM side. When will they ever look at updating Cavity Milling to include STEP UP machining to make better use
our tooling and time savings. Volumill and Mastercam have had this for quite awhile.

RE: Whats new in NX 10 CAM?

While I won't attempt to list them, note that there are plans to submit 30 CAM projects in NX 10.0.1.x and an additional 11 CAM projects in NX 10.0.2.x. Also note that there were only a total of 26 CAM projects submitted to NX 10.0 and some of those might have been architectural in nature needed before projects planned for the first and second MR could even to implemented.

While I can't speak for the CAM organization, I suspect that this is going to be their approach going forward, concentrating on the MR releases for the majority of their enhancements and updates.

RE: Whats new in NX 10 CAM?

Siemens has been talking about releasing new manufacturing functionality mainly in maintenance releases, which is fine with me. However at a recent PLM World RUG event there were many users disappointed to find out there was no new 10 functionality covered at all; only 9 content. It really should have been communicated better. Also recently, there was an enhancement to verify simulation in a maintenance pack and I hope Siemens never does that again, instead sticking exclusively with MR's for new content. There was a conflict with some customer default settings as well as a performance hit in an effort to enhance verify. The net result was in the right direction but, again, there was no communication about new functionality in the MP. Besides that, some customers avoid MP's like the plague because there is very little testing on MP's; almost like Russian Roulette! Well, perhaps not quite like that but definitely a LOT less cam testing is done with MP's than with MR's.

Yes I'm one who sticks to MR's for stability. Better communication would also help. After being a Mastercam user for 15+ years
I would never go back after using NX beginning with NX7.0. The time savings is incredible and can't imagine using any other.

RE: Whats new in NX 10 CAM?

I know this is off topic but I couldn't agree with you more. We have a few people on NX cam, some on NX cad and some on MasterCam. Even now MC has no native solid modeling to speak of and nothing like our cut areas that actually works. I see our MC users building extension surfaces all the time and they never use an entire model for part like we can. They have a lot of really nice features but the base that it's built on is last century tech. In view of all this the first thing MC dealers tells users at their new version roll-outs is "Hey everybody, glad to see you're here and using the most popular software available! Nobody can come close to our market share!" (Yeah, well MonkeyShaft used to say the same things but people who know other OS's knew MS didn't really offer anything useful half-way decent until XP came out, lol. Vista was a steaming pile and 7 is what I'd call a nice operating system. Then they dropped the ball again with a horrible dual UI that should never have been released for the desktop.) IMO Mastercam has a long way to go to be called a really good software. I have to admit MC has added multi-threading to some operations which is so nice. That is one area NX lacks pretty bad. We're just getting going on spawning multiple processes but real multi-threading is so much more productive. I hope that Siemens is working on multi-threading and not telling us...

Waiting for 10.2

RE: Whats new in NX 10 CAM?

There are many areas of NX which are multi-threaded and again, I can't speak for the CAM group, however they are very aware of the need for enhanced performance and leveraging the hardware to the greatest extent possible, but again I can't speak for how they are going about doing that.

RE: Whats new in NX 10 CAM?

Regarding the releases for CAM, we are releasing new functionality in MRs in order to deliver it as soon as possible, instead of waiting for the next main release. The reason NX 10 may have appeared to have fewer CAM enhancements is because most of them were delivered early in 9.0.1 and 9.0.2. Had we not included the projects in the earlier MRs, you would have seen the normal long list of CAM enhancements in NX 10.

Although there were enhancements in NX 9.0.3 MP1, this was an exception that we do not plan to repeat. MPs should generally be for PR fixes only.

CAM users should read the release notes and pay special attention to the release timing. Since NX 9.0.3 development ended after NX 10, the CAM enhancements added in 9.0.3 MP1 and MP2 will become available in NX 10.0.1.

We have also included a section entitled "Maximizing the benefits of multi-core hardware with NX CAM". In the release notes, go to
NX 10 Caveats and Product Notes > CAM > NX 10 Manufacturing Product Notes.
