inside flush grinding of butt weld

inside flush grinding of butt weld

inside flush grinding of butt weld

(OP)
During inspection of weldolet, mismatch between the weldolet and run pipe hole ID was observed. The run pipe hole ID was smaller than the weldolet. Hence flush grinding was advised. But now QC has rejected the weld, stating flush grind is not allowed as per code. The piping code is B31.3 . During flush grinding, the weld bead was removed. I need your advice if there is any provision in the code to have the weld accepted.

RE: inside flush grinding of butt weld

Gotta call B.S. on this one. First, grinding has never been disallowed by ASME. Second, if the grinding did not remove the O'let, then the O'let weld still exists. The only thing that was removed was the root reinforcement of the O'let weld. Root reinforcement is not required per any of the ASME Codes, especially one as generous as B31.3. Sounds like somebody needs to provide that inspector with a code-book. Or hire a better-informed Inspector. Personal opinions cannot be injected into inspections, what's in the codebook is what counts. Period.

And stop Double-Posting. We only answer one question one time.

RE: inside flush grinding of butt weld

B31.3 does not forbid. It's been done at least as long as the past 45 years that I have been involved in B31.3 pipe fabrication.

RE: inside flush grinding of butt weld

I have to agree with Duwe6. If i was you i would ask to see the WPS (to see if it prohibits grinding of weld reinforcement). Then ask where it is stated in the code book that flush grinding is prohibited.
