...the etymology of steel "centering" or its usefulness as a term these days?

Every time I see our spec section it makes me wonder. The Arcom guide specs 2004 and 2012 do not have anything, that I can see, that mention centering.

RE: Does anyone know...

I believe it is an antiquated term that refers to 9/16" deep non-composite steel deck, typically supported by closely spaced (24", plus or minus) open-web floor joists. I have seen reference to it on old drawings but have not seen it used on drawings, or used in regular conversations, in more than 20 years. I do not know why it was called "centering".

RE: Does anyone know...

The term has little usefulness if we don't know what it means.

For what it's worth, it seems to be involved with formwork. May be something in ACI SP-4 "Formwork for Concrete".
