Gusset plate with v3
Gusset plate with v3
(OP)
I have a gusset plate connection with V3 in the diagonals. The pdf shows a side view of the connection.
i was wondering if we could discuss the effects of V3 on this connection, of course the main concern is bending of the plate, but how will it bend , what is the eccentricity?, what is the section that will resist the moment?
i could use your valuable theories :)

1) Examine a line of flexure running perpendicular to the brace at the end of the brace.
2) Examine a fictional strip of the gusset as a beam spanning perpendicular to the brace.
3) Do some fancy yield line voodo.
What's the source of the V3 load? Is it wind? Or is this a horizontal brace with a T-Rex skeleton suspended at mid-span?
No matter how you evaluate the V3 resistance, by the book you ought to combine those stresses with the stresses flying around due to other load sources. In practice, however, the V3 loads are usually dwarfed by the bracing loads. In theses cases, many a rational engineer has chosen not to sweat the V3 business.
The greatest trick that bond stress ever pulled was convincing the world it didn't exist.
