Chord wall plastification for RHS .

Chord wall plastification for RHS .

I have a shear plate with axial force welded to the face of RHS column, when i checked the chord wall plastification using design guide 24 the wall failed, i am considering using reinforcement plate welded to the face of the RHS, but my concern is how will i insure that the plate will work together with the wall of the RHS, let us assume that there as an axial tension force in the shear plate the plate will act as if there a prying action effect right??, will using a spot weld for the reinforcement plate be enough to assume that the plate work together with the wall of the RHS.

RE: Chord wall plastification for RHS .

I haven't done this before but my thinking is that you should design the reinforcing plate to be able to get the job done by itself. Even if you threw in some intermittent plug/slot welds, those are only good for shear transfer.

The greatest trick that bond stress ever pulled was convincing the world it didn't exist.

i was hoping that someone suggest this, this is what i did, thank you Kootk :)

I agree with koot...not sure what the OP means by spot weld...I usually design the reinf pl to span from radius to radius on the face of the member....
