Applying Multiple materials same model

Applying Multiple materials same model

Applying Multiple materials same model

(OP)
I'll start by saying i'm not an expert at Abaqus by any stretch of the imagination. What I am trying to do is: I am modelling a canitlever beam, but i want to model it using a range of materials. My question is, Is it possible to apply all these materials in the same job or do I have run different jobs for different materials. I may have phrased the question incorrectly but what is the most efficient way of doing what I am trying to do?

RE: Applying Multiple materials same model

Typically separate simulations would be run. However, on occasion if I have a small job with a quick solve time I have had multiple studies in 1 simulation.

For separate simulations just make a copy of the model in the same CAE file and name the copy for the material used. I find it's easier bookkeeping to create all of the materials before making the copies. From here simply change which material the section is pointing to for the different simulations.

For multiple studies in the same simulation create copies of the part and assign the appropriate material to each. Then add them all to the assembly and apply appropriate boundary conditions to each. You may or may not want to reposition each part for viewing purposes. Assuming you will fix 1 end of each beam a single fixed constraint could be used for all.

I hope this helps.

Tks Rob,

I will probably just use separate simulations. A bit annoying but sure on I go!

RE: Applying Multiple materials same model

One job won't do it. However, parametric capability should let you run as many separate simulations as you like with one command (from the command line) - if there is an analytical expression that you could use to come up with the material constants OR if you are doing a search in the parameter space. In other words, Abaqus will create multiple jobs for you as long as there is an easy way to specify the material constants.
