log bleachers

log bleachers

(OP)
I have a client who is requesting to construct a log bleachers structure. The structure will have a viewing platform 10ft above the ground and would be open with a mono slope roof. I am concerned with the exposure of the logs to moisture/weather. There is the potential for snow and ice to be on the structure for extended periods of time. Are there any potential issues with this type of structure? What is the best way to finish this type of structure?

RE: log bleachers

Bleachers are notorious for collapse. The internet is a lovely source of reports (both useless journalist garbage, and real engineering reports). Be very careful, and conservative.

You've been warned.

RE: log bleachers

logs would be pretty heavy, won't they ? unless you use hollow plastic logs ?

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?

I agree that this is not the typical use of a log structure and would like feedback on whether log framing is acceptable construction for bleachers.

RE: log bleachers

As long as it's designed in accordance with National Design Standard for Wood Construction I don't see why it wouldn't work. The wood should be pressure treated to account for moisture and at that point my concern would be with how much contact the pressure treating chemicals would have with human skin. If that issue is resolved then the rest would be up to engineering principles, I would think.

RE: log bleachers

that brings up another thought ... splinters ! and resultant law-suits !!

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?

rb... You're just a pain in the . ... .. backside.
