Offset curve out of tolerance (free form)

Offset curve out of tolerance (free form)

Offset curve out of tolerance (free form)

(OP)
Hi All

I'm messing around with some surfacing prior top running a training course and I'm having trouble with an warning which states that my offset curve (25) is out of tolerance on the attached model. I'd like understand what I need to do to get rid of the warning, and what has caused it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

RE: Offset curve out of tolerance (free form)

The "advanced curve fit" option has been turned on in the "settings" section of the dialog. The message is warning you that the specified distance tolerance cannot be met with the given input. The easy way to clear the message is to turn off the "advanced curve fit" and let the system find settings that will result in the desired tolerance. However, if you need control of the parameterization, the only way to get it within tolerance is by giving the system more control points to work with. This can be accomplished by increasing the specified degree and/or segments. In your case, if you need a single segment spline, degree 7 seems to work; if you need a degree 5 spline, 3 segments seems to work.

Alternatively, you could use "deviation check" to see where the offset curve is out of tolerance; perhaps the current output is good enough and you can simply open the tolerance a little (keeping the specified single segment degree 5 output while clearing the message).

Turning the advanced curve fit completely wrecks the model, nothing will hang together if I do that.

RE: Offset curve out of tolerance (free form)

Turning off the option changes the resulting shape slightly which causes "through curve mesh 41" to fail because a few of the primary curves no longer intersect the offset curve within the distance tolerance. Update the primary curves to lie on the newly created offset curve and everything will come back.

In cases such as this, I'll often create a datum plane for each (what is in your model) primary curve. You can then create an associative intersection point between the datum plane and cross curve (the offset curve); and use this point as the end point of each primary curve spline. This makes the model more tolerant of design changes.
