UPS Maintenance

UPS Maintenance

UPS Maintenance

(OP)
Hi all,

What are the recommended UPS maintenance? Here i am referring to Inverters and Chargers only.

We are using AEG Saft Protect Inverters and Profitec Chargers. They consists of mainly electronics cards, capacitors and the usual. I am not too sure how to maintain a system that depend mainly on electronic cards.

I heard before that harmonic measurement is one sapect of UPS maintenance, but how important is it?

Please help, thanks!

RE: UPS Maintenance

First, check the manufacturer's instruction manual.  There is usually a section on recommended maintenance.
Otherwise, some of the following may help:
1. Perform a general visual inspection to look for the obvious such as: smoky deposits, odor, charred parts, arcing contacts or connections, loose connections, noisy cooling fan motor, or leaky blistered capacitors.
2.  Yearly do a infrared scan.
3.  Monthly check the ac ripple on the dc voltage output of the battery charger (will give indication of capacitor breakdown and/or firing circuit problems).
4.  Clean units to keep dust build up to a minimum. (heat is an enemy of electronics)

that's a start.

RE: UPS Maintenance

If you only have 1 unit it is probaly best to have the manufactur do the service. If you have more, most of the suppliers have a day or 2 school for maintenance training.
Checking the semi conductors for leakage current ( scr or xistors) is one way to find components that may need replacing before a compleate failour.
