HVAC designing for a basement of a hotel (need assistance)

HVAC designing for a basement of a hotel (need assistance)

HVAC designing for a basement of a hotel (need assistance)

(OP)
Hi,

I have given a task to calculate Cooling and heating load of a building, in basement of building, they have following spaces:

1. Health Club (Gymnasium)
2. Swimming pool
3. Steam baths
4. Turkish bath
5. Massage room
6. Jacuzzi
7. Kitchen
8. Laundry
etc.

I have not calculated before. Can someone assist me in calculation?
Do we need to install Air Condition system in Steam baths, massage rooms, Turkish bath and Jacuzzi or only ventilation is enough?

thank you in advance.

You will have to find an Engineer in your office to help you. This is a web forum, not Engineering school

ok fine. . .

can someone only answer this question:

Do we need to install Air Condition system in Steam baths, massage rooms, Turkish bath and Jacuzzi or only ventilation is enough?

No cooling for baths, only ventilation, while steam bath does not need anything but its own services.

To do a calculation you will need to know many things including the number and activity of people in the spaces, type and power level of lights, wall construction, and orientation of rooms just to name some. You will also want to use a calculation program such as Carrier's HAP or Trane Trace.

How these and other unmentioned variables work together to determine a building's cooling/heating load is best left up to your instructors or a senior mechanical engineer in your office (whichever may be the case). In short, to fully explain how to do and understand a complete load calculation is going beyond the scope of any forum.

To answer your question of AC in steam baths, massage rooms, Turkish bath and Jacuzzi: in general no in steam baths, yes in massage room and Jacuzzi, and no clue about Turkish bath, BUT as is usually the case for all these rooms, it depends. Again, working directly with someone with experience is your best bet.

Thank you for replies...

Yes, you are right, Dbill74
I am using Carrier's HAP for the load calculation. I have completed the calculations for upper floors.

Regarding basement floor,

For Swimming Pool and massage room, basically, I need assistance in defining parameters for "System Components" and "Zone Components", in HAP.

RE: HVAC designing for a basement of a hotel (need assistance)

Your system and zone components are going to be similar to your inputs for the upper floors. Select the equipment and control components that you want in your system.

The challenge for rooms like pool rooms is that they tend to have much higher percentage of latent load than a typical office or other occupied space. In which case, the excess latent load is accounted for in space properties (in HAP see Internals tab, Miscellaneous loads on bottom right). For a pool room, excessive latent load is due to the pool and evaporation. How much is dependent on several factors including water temperature, air temperature, average air humidity, is the pool heated or not, etc. This is where input from an in office peer will be more valuable than input from a forum.

You can find guides for estimating these excess loads online or I'm sure the ASHRAE handbooks have something that can help you too. If you do find something in a book or online, it is still a good idea to run your calculations by an peer in your office.

cheetah

I feel your pain, you are one of those sole mechanical engineer in the department working most likely for a contractor, I bet you do not have a single ASHRAE, IMC, or NFPA book in your office. Most likely you work for a contractor in the middle east - this kind of situation is rampant over there.
You need to admit to your boss that you are clueless right away - that way, you may keep your job.... as a drafter.

Am I wrong Cheetah?

RE: HVAC designing for a basement of a hotel (need assistance)

You have basically specialized systems in the basement.

The pool will need a dedciated unit. Talk to a unit manufacturer for pool dehumidifcation units, they have design guides you can follow to meet the load.

Not sure about the bath rooms.

Massage room can be treated as an office with its own temperarue control. Maybe provide extra heat for comfort?

Kitehn may have a hood? You will need a makeup air unit.

Laundry will laso need a makeup air unit.

All these spaces really need dedicated units because they are all different systems. They can each be there own questions. Too much to explain here. Tackle each one individially. And do searches here for each one individually.
