NFPA 54, 56 ... Purging and Inerting

NFPA 54, 56 ... Purging and Inerting

(OP)
Hello all,

NFPA 54 section 8.3.2 has a table showing which pipes need to be purged into and out of service, ie if it is a 3" pipe that is greater than 30 feet in length.

NFPA 56 does not have a similar table.

I am at a new facility under construction. May this facility once operational by the owner follow the guideline in NFPA 54 or is it implicit in NFPA 56 that all work on natural gas piping requires purging into and out of service? (For instance, if a pressure gauge needs to be isolated and replaced, which being a few feet of 1/4" tubing would not require usage of inert gases following the table in NFPA 54 8.3.2)

Thank you!

I don't have those codes, however, make sure that you read the scopes of the codes themselves and of the sections in those codes that you mentioned. Making references without consulting the scopes of these articles can lead to faulty judgments.
