SolidWorks 2014 Import settings

(OP)
In SOlidWOrks 2014, is there a way to control how SolidWorks imports various 3D CAD formats, specifically STEP files??
Why is it that SolidWorks imports STEP files as surfaces, not solid bodies? Is that a function of how the original file was saved?

What I really want is to import the STEP file as solid bodies so I don't have to go back through and knit together all the individula surfaces to make solid bodies of the imported parts?

Where is the setting that I missed?

RE: SolidWorks 2014 Import settings

Browse to step file. Above the "open" button, select "options".
You can select "try forming solids".

RE: SolidWorks 2014 Import settings

If you have that selected and its still surfaces, then there is a problem in the file. You would then have to work with the file itself to convert it back to a solid. Use Tools\Check to help you find the areas that might be causing the file to not be a solid. Then of course your going to have to use surfaces to fix the model... good luck.
