I am working on hydro station refurbishment and I have a number of materials that are referred to on the drawing related to the period of construction of 1936 to 1950. The materials are referenced as follows:

Steel Forging ASTM A236-42C (Cross reference BS 24 Part 4 Spec 9C -1941)
Corrosion resisting Steel ASTM A177-44 (Cross Reference BS/ ST A.5- 1945 V25B)
Axle Steel ASTM A236-42C (Cross Reference BS 24 Part 1 Spec 2 -1941)
Tyre Steel ASTM A244 - 44C (Cross Reference BS 24 Part 2 Spec 4 Class E -1942)

I need to use a modern equivalent of these steels. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

A-236 replaced by A-668
A-177 replaced by A-666
A-244 replaced by A-504

I had this very situation for a customer with tanks. The first thing I did was go on E-bay and purchase the ASTM standards book from the era (in my case, a set of 1942 standards - only 3 volumes then). I could then see the actual specifications and match them to current standards to suggest replacement. I also could test to make sure material from the time really met specification. I have since bought appropriate ASTM volumes on-line going back to 1912(!) for the purpose of examining customer materials.

Thanks for the input. I will try and get a set of ASTM vintage standards on ebay.

I will guess that you plan to weld these steels? If all else fails, take samples for chemical analysis, from which you can calculate carbon equivalent. If any of these are castings then your biggest hazard will be entrained subsurface sand popping up during welding.
