tubing design

hi,
I am exploring tubing design. Our comppany wants to implement it. I just want to know about the feasibility of this module.Because i reckon it involves a lot of customisation in the backend. So could any one please throw some light on how much feasible and comfortable it is and what are the customisations involved. Is it really necessary to customise xml files for this module or can we use it straight away like any other module.please guide me.

RE: tubing design

this need serious customization. Get some help from your VAR or DS.

hi,

thanks for your reply. But i have a question here.we are gonna use tubing design only and not all the disciplines of the equipments and systems. So as far as i explored i understand that for tubing design alone it is enough to go with the cnext and the project.xml file.Only for the usage of other disciplines and applications we need to customoise.is it really so?Please correct me.

Hi,

I need a smnall clarity on this topic. We have decided to go with this. But i need to know what are the customisations to be done in the xml file for defining the Design rules and catalogs. How do you define catalogs and rules for the parts involved? Any ideas pl.We gonna use only tubing design and need to define the requirements only for thet application.Awaiting help from the champions.

RE: tubing design

Hi Sudharkan,

I work in a tubing factory and we use CATIA V5-6 R2014 doing tubing for Boeing, Nordam and many other companies.

I think knowing how to use GSD (Generative Shape Design) is important! The tubing module could be of good use also to improve your design with tolerances.

You will need to know swaging and fitting applications for different types of materials.

The equipment is costly, but from what I have learned that there are very good modern types out there. You will also need a VMM to measure your results for FAI's (First Article Inspection).

I wish you the best of luck!

hi netsurfer2,

Thanks for your reply. But what exactly i am looking for is the customisation part of it in the context of CATIA.

RE: tubing design

I'm also in tubing (Automotive, cooling systems etc)- Is the tubing workbench really worthwhile? I've never had a chance to take a peek, we just lay a polyline, sweep and thickness with rotated sketches or multi-sections for end forms and planished parts.
Just curious!

RE: tubing design

Tubing workbench (together with the others like Waveguide, Piping, HVAC, etc...) seems to be primarily intended for Dassault's rather unsuccessful attempt to get into the AEC/Plant industrial sector. To some extent this also seems quite logical for shipbuilding outfitting. However, I still think it's advantageous for automotive/aerospace as well, afterall the idea when used together with the P&ID diagram workbenches is an integrated and spec driven way of quickly and accuractely modeling routed systems like tubing.

The problem is price. Everyone buys CATIA but nobody expects to pay for another but Part and Assembly design, possibly Drafting too. No. I don't think it's 'okay' to just create a polyline and sweep rotated sketches through 'em. But, that's just my humble opinion.

RE: tubing design

Thanks for the response... I've always been curious about it but you're right, price is a problem. Apparently!

Cheers
Simon

RE: tubing design

If price is a problem, don't buy CATIA. I hate it when companies do that. "Hey let's buy CATIA because we feel like we own the place." but then "Let's stick to just the basic modules mid-range MCAD tools tend to do better anyway, because we need to keep the costs down." Brrrrilliant!
