How to put text on a curved surface of a cylinder?

How to put text on a curved surface of a cylinder?

(OP)
I have created the 3D text by making drawing and saving as a .dxf file and then copy/pasting that into my model.
I have a pipe that I would like to print text on, possibly using the pocket tool. How can I put the text on to the curved surface of my cylinder?
I tried pasting the text onto a plane, but the plane doesn't make contact with the curved surface.

Also when I try pasting, I get a non-connex error. I assume its because of the text I'm using. How can I create an outline for my text so I can close gaps?
