Water Rejection_Irrigation canal

(OP)
I have a question. I appreciate that if someone can help me.
I want to know how engineers manage flooding in irrigation channels which has been caused by Water rejection (Water Rejection happens when farmers cancel their order due to rainfall).
Is there any kind of structures (like detention basin) can be designed for irrigation channels?
If there is a big reservoir down stream of our irrigation network, How can we devise a new water release strategy for reservoir to protect downstream of our reservoir when rejection flood happens? (I mean new strategy for releasing enough water before flood happening)
Thanks.

RE: Water Rejection_Irrigation canal

usually dumped to a tailwater ditch or wasteway. yes, they sometimes dump to a reservoir or detention pond. in the worst case, they also have spillways for emergency use. but generally there is plenty of storage or freeboard in the canal.
