Cooling Towers

Cooling Towers

(OP)
Anybody knows any basic material on cooling Towers?
Why the are so tall and curved, S-shaped?
Any source for determination of lateral loads on this structures?

Thank you

RE: Cooling Towers

There are natural draft (very tall, weird shape), forced draft (squat, fans blowing air through water) and many other cooling systems (ponds, sprays, etc.).
There might be textbooks that address these. But I'm sure there's a lot of application of ASCE 7 for wind and seismic. But most of these designs are delegated to specialty firms, like Research Cottrell.

RE: Cooling Towers

Googling "hyperboloid cooling tower" pulls up quite a bit of general information on that type.

I don't know about ASCE 7. On nuclear plants, there are separate standards for seismic loading, etc., and I don't know if those extend to peripheral items like the cooling towers. In any event, a large expensive odd-shaped structure that is expected to interact with the atmosphere to function would be a prime candidate for wind tunnel tests.

RE: Cooling Towers

Some basic information may be obtained from here: Link

ASCE 7-10 chapters 13 and 15 have seismic and other loading related information relating to cooling towers.

Can regular ASCE 7 be used for wind load? Which section of ASCE will be appropriate?
Anyone has any article that has wind load calcs possibly as a sample?
I am stuck here. Thanks for any help.
