Alocrom 100 coating vs Stainless steel

Alocrom 100 coating vs Stainless steel

(OP)
Hi All,

We have a 1mm thick sheet component (a panel fascia) that is specified as Aluminium with an Alocrom 100 coating with a Painted finish on the front face. The rear face is left unpainted and has a safety earth connection made via a spring clip. The unit is used in a marine environment (on-board ships, but not external areas).

We have had problems with our supplier, and to meet time scales they have offered to produce the parts in stainless steel.

My question: Any reason why this would not be acceptable?

My understanding is that the Alocrom offers a degree of corrosion resistance and good electrical conductivity. Would stainless steel be a suitable alternative?

Apart from cost, any reason why stainless steel should not be used in place of Aluminium with Alocrom 100 coating?

I hope you can help!

Best regards

CD

RE: Alocrom 100 coating vs Stainless steel

Are you still going to try to paint the panel?

Alochrom is a decent primer so paint adhesion will be quite good.

Paiting stainless steel is not so easy and you will need a fairly aggressive etch primer.

Hi,

Many thanks for the feedback. We still intend to paint the front face so that's useful info.

Best regards,

CD
