Historic Pile Sizes

(OP)
I am working on a project analyzing geotechnical resistance of piles constructed in the 1950s. The pile logs that I have access to simply state that the pile size is #1. Does anybody know if that is a standardized size or is it just something the installer used? Better yet, what does that correlate to for the outside diameter of the pile? They are closed end pipe piles, but I cannot find the diameter in any of the documentation. Thanks.

RE: Historic Pile Sizes

GeoFunGuy - The "#1" designation was most likely the installer's marking, as you have assumed. Both then and now, making simplified identification markings on piling as they are delivered to a job site is not unusual. For example, sometimes the length is painted on each pile. Construction field crews have no need for the detailed info of pile size, they have more pressing concerns.
